THE CHALLENGE

Why we’re here

Wildlife under pressure in one of the world’s richest ecosystems.

Costa Rica’s wildlife is unimaginably magical — a density of life found almost nowhere else on the planet. But like wildlife everywhere, it is under threat from habitat loss, road traffic and illegal trade.

Demand for wildlife rescue in the region is greater than existing organisations can cope with, with no equivalent facilities for many miles. Yaba Chic was built to close that gap.

A single purpose-built centre, built because the Osa could not wait any longer for one.

WHERE WE WORK

On the Sweet Gulf

On the edge of the Golfo Dulce.

Yaba Chic lies within a wider network of protected tropical forest on the edge of the Golfo Dulce — the remarkable “Sweet Gulf”, visited by humpback whales from both Northern and Southern Hemisphere populations to breed and raise their calves.

It is a landscape where rainforest meets ocean, and where a single centre can serve both.

OUR AIM

Three steps. One simple purpose.

Step 01

Rescue.

We receive injured, orphaned or confiscated wild animals from across the Osa.

Step 02

Rehabilitate.

Expert veterinary care, inside enclosures surrounded by the forest they belong to.

Step 03

Return.

Wherever possible, every animal goes back to the wild where it was found.

— Rescue, rehabilitate and, wherever possible, return every animal to the wild.
